How to Split a PDF

Select how to split it. Pick a mode based on what you need:

  • Split by selected page range: extract specific pages (e.g., pages 3–7) into a new file.
  • Split every N pages: break a long document into equal chunks (e.g., every 5 pages becomes its own PDF).
  • Extract individual pages: pull out one or more single pages as separate files.
  • Split by odd or even pages: in moments separate pages based on their order.

Common Questions

Will splitting affect the quality of my PDF?

No. Splitting only separates pages - it doesn't re-compress, re-render, or alter the content, so text, images, and formatting stay exactly as they were in the source file.

Can I split a PDF into over two files at once?

Yes. Using "split every N pages" or "extract individual pages," a single PDF can be divided into as many files as needed, delivered together in a ZIP file.

Do I need to know the exact page numbers in advance?

No - the page thumbnail preview lets you visually select pages or ranges before confirming, so you don't need to know page numbers ahead of time.

Is it possible to put the split pages back together afterward?

Yes. Use [Merge PDF](/merge-pdf) to recombine any of the finished files into a single document again.

Why did I get a ZIP file instead of a PDF?

When splitting produces multiple output files - for example, extracting several individual pages - they are bundled into a ZIP for one download. If you extract only a single page or range, you will receive a PDF directly.

Is it possible to split a scanned or image-based PDF?

Yes. Splitting works on the page level regardless of whether the content is text or scanned images, so it doesn't require OCR - the pages are separated precisely as they appear.
